Introduction

The 2382-18 qualification is primarily aimed at practicing electricians with relevant experience and other allied professionals, e.g., surveyors, consultants and other trades needing to update and enhance their understanding of the IET Wiring Regulations. It is also suitable for anyone wishing to demonstrate an understanding of the IET 18th Edition Wiring Regulations BS7671.

The qualification provides a comprehensive understanding of IET Wiring Regulations (BS 7671) which are the definitive standard for the electrical equipment and electrical systems. They set the requirements and operating criteria for the UL and correspond to EC Standards and are recognized by the British Standards Institute as BS7671.  It is intended to ensure that individuals are conversant with the format, content and application of the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS 7671: 2018

This qualification was developed by City and Guilds in conjunction with members of the electrical industry including NICEIC, ECA and is recognized by employers as the standard that Approved Electricians must meet to be up to date with current legislation and Industry Standards

Course Designed For

This course does not include any practical element and is theory only. The course will take a structured approach to ensure that all elements of the of the unit provides the learner with an understanding of the full content of BS7671.  It is understood that people learn in a variety of ways, so the methodology will be varied as below:

  • Limited use of PowerPoint presentation
  • Constant use of IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition BS 7671 to enable learners to be able to navigate the text book in preparation for open-booked online examination.
  • Use of whiteboard and flip chart to explain work related scenarios.
  • Group work to add interaction
  • Practice papers to prepare for online examination
  • Homework to recap on previous day’s subjects
  • Continual assessment of understanding

Course Pre-requisites

  • Learners must be 16 years or over.
  • Learners must not be entered for a qualification of the same type, content, and level as that of a qualification they already have.
  • There are no formal entry requirements, however it is expected that the learners will have basic knowledge of electrical science.

Course Content

The course will include the following content:

  • Understanding the scope and fundamental principles of BS7671
  • Understanding the definition used in BS7671
  • Understanding how to assess general characteristics of electrical installations.
  • Understanding the requirements for safety for electrical installations.
  • Understanding the requirements for selection and erection of equipment for electrical installations.
  • Understanding the requirement for inspecting and testing electrical installations
  • Understand the requirements for Special Installations or locations as identified in BS7671.
  • Understanding information contained in Appendices in BS7671

Refresher Training

Electricians are required to keep updated of amendments to the current BS7671 and to update to the next edition in due course. Industry standards dictate that to be an Approved Electrician candidates must hold the current BS7671 Edition and also the 2391-52 (or equivalent) Inspection and Testing Certificate.

Course Assessment

City and Guilds open-booked online assessment upon completion of course. HSCT will provide each learner with a copy of the text book ‘The Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671:2018’
