Introduction

This qualification is designed solely for those experienced persons who are, or have been, working in the industry, practicing as an Electrician for a MINIMUM OF FIVE YEARS and who can demonstrate their technical knowledge, performance and competence to the industry standards at Level 3 in one of the occupations of this qualification and inline with the 18th Edition of the IET Wiring Regulations (BS7671)

There are two pathways within this qualification which are:

  • Maintenance
  • Installation

This qualification has been developed with following key Electrotechnical stakeholders:

Course Designed For

This qualification provides a route for operatives who have been working in the electrical industry, carrying out electrical tasks, but who have no formal qualification as yet.  The qualification is designed to take into account the existing qualifications and experience of the experienced worker.

HSCT will carry out a comprehensive assessment of each potential candidate, to ensure that the learner meets the criteria for the course potential learner. Learners will be required to demonstrate acceptable knowledge of the current industry requirement with respect to the IET Wiring Regulations and Inspection and Testing.

The course is designed to ensure that each learner has auditable evidence that he/she has fully satisfied the requirements or each unit of the qualification.

Learners will be required to provide sufficient valid and authentic evidence from the site of their previous work to demonstrate that they can fully meet the performance requirements within each unit of this qualification)

Candidates will have their suitability assessed by completing the skills Scan document (from City and Guilds site) We will fully meet our Centre responsibility to ensure that a robust initial assessment is carried out and that relevant documentation is available subject to audit. These assessments will be carried out by highly experienced occupationally competent electricians.

The initial assessment will identify if the learner has particular training requirements such as the 18th Edition (BS7671) 2391-52 (Inspection and Testing) AM2 etc as per the list provided on the Qualification Handbook.

This course will be designed to provide theoretic and practical instruction and continual assessment throughout the course, with the aim that the learner produces a portfolio of evidence that ensures that he/she is deemed competent to hold the qualification of Approved Electrician.

Course Pre-requisites

  • Learners must be 18 years or over. (however, because of the prerequisite five years’ experience, we would expect them to be 23 or over to meet that criteria.
  • Learners must provide evidence through assessment and provision evidence of any relevant qualifications that they have worked in the Electrical Industry carrying out electrical work for a minimum of five years. 
  • This qualification is not suitable for those not experienced in the electrical installation and maintenance industry.

Course Content

  • Unit 102- Apply Health, Safety and Environmental Considerations.

    This Unit is designed to enable learners to develop the skills and apply the relevant knowledge associated with Health and Safety Legislation, practices and procedures when installing and maintaining electrical systems and equipment, this will include:

    • The risk assessment process – theory
    • Method statements – scenarios and practical
    • Safe systems of work – worked in conjunction with risk assessment and method statement 
    • Safe tools and equipment – practical and theory (PUWER)
    • Safe materials – theory – COSHH etc
    • Safe methods and procedures on site – looking at Policy, Plans and procedures
    • Safe use of access equipment – theory and practical application
    • Environmental implications and legislation

Ensure learner provides the following evidence: This will be direct observation on at least two separate occasions in the workplace by a qualified assessor.

  • Auditable evidence sourced from real working environment that the learner has demonstrated in two separate occasions that they can apply health and safety legislation and working practices

Unit 106 – Organise and Oversee the Electrical Work Environment

This unit is designed to enable learners to develop skills required and apply the associated knowledge, so that they can demonstrate that they can implement practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment for the installation of electrical systems and equipment.  Upon completion learners will provide a portfolio of evidence that they can competently:

  • Be able to provide relevant people with technical and functional information for work on electrical systems and equipment
  • Be able to oversee Health and Safety during work on electrical systems and equipment. 
  • Be able to co-ordinate liaison with other relevant persons during work activities.
  • Be able to organise and oversee work activities and operations:
  • Be able to organise a programme for working on electrical systems and equipment

Assessment will be achieved by learner being assessed by competent assessor on at least two separate occasions where they will be observed implement practices and procedures for overseeing and organising the work environment for the installations of the electrical systems and equipment in accordance with the assessment criteria.

Unit 108 –  Terminate and Connect Conductors.

This unit is designed to enable the learner to develop the skills required and apply the associated knowledge, in order that they are able to demonstrate the competence required to terminate and connect conductors and cables in electrical systems in accordance with industry practices, statutory and non-statutory regulations.

This will include the following showing evidence in competence of the following:

  • Prepare to terminate and connect cables and conductors
  • Terminate and connect conductors and cables

Unit 109 – Apply Design and Installation Practices and Procedures.

This unit is designed to enable the learner to develop the skills required and apply the associated knowledge in order that they are able to demonstrate the competence required to plan, prepare and install wiring systems and associated equipment in buildings, structures and the environment in accordance with approved industry practices, statutory and non-statutory regulations:

  • The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989)
  • BS 7671
  • Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978
  • Building Regulations (2000)

This will include learning and being assessed on the following:

  • Preparing to install wiring systems, enclosures and associate equipment.
  • Interpreting appropriate information for the installation of wiring systems, enclosures and associated equipment.
  • Installing wiring systems, and equipment in accordance with current relevant statutory and non-statutory regulations
  • Confirming the quality of completed works.

Upon completion the learner will be assessed on his/her competence to carry out the above tasks safely and effectively.

Unit 110 – Apply Practices and procedures for Maintenance.

This unit is designed to enable the learner to develop the skills required and apply the associated knowledge, in order that they are able to demonstrate the competence required to maintain electrical systems and equipment in accordance with approved industry practices, statutory and non-statutory regulations:

  • The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989)
  • BS 7671
  • Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978
  • Building Regulations (2000)

This will include learning and being assessed on the following.

  • Prepare to carry out electrical maintenance.
  • Carry out electrical maintenance

Unit 113 – Inspect, Test and Commission Electrical Systems –  this will include completion of City and Guilds 2391-52

This unit is designed to enable the learner to develop the skills required and apply associated knowledge. In order that they are able to demonstrate the competence required to inspect, test, commission and certify electrical systems and equipment in buildings, structures and the environment in accordance with approved industry practices, statutory and non-statutory regulations:

  • The Electricity at Work Regulations (1989)
  • BS 7671
  • Health and Safety at Work (NI) Order 1978
  • Building Regulations (2000)

This will include learning and assessment on the following:

  • Being able to confirm safety of the system and equipment prior to completion of inspection, testing and commissioning in according with statutory and non-statutory regulations.
  • Being able to inspect electrical systems and equipment
  • Being able to test and commission electrical systems and equipment

The learner will provide evidence in accordance with the qualification handbook on all units of 2346-03 qualification.  The assessor and IV will ensure that each learner produces a portfolio of evidence which is auditable.  All training will be fully inline with latest standards, technologies and practices which relate and affects of all topics covered in each unit.

Refresher Training

Electricians are required to keep updated of amendments to the current BS7671 and to update to the next edition in due course. They may decide to continue with their learning to achieve the 2396 Level 4 qualification.

Full Covid-19 controls will be in place at all times during the course as per current legislation and guidance

Course Assessment

Continual practical assessment will be carried out throughout this qualification with each learner producing portfolios of evidence of their competence in all areas of the qualification. For 18th edition 2382-18 learners will complete courses, online evolve multiple choice examinations and in the case of 2391, marked classwork and practical assessments of initial and periodic inspection, testing and certification.
