Introduction

The aim of this unit is to assess learners against the national standard carrying out emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from a realistic high risk confined space environment. The learner will show that they can:

  • prepare to work safely under emergency conditions
  • enter and exit confined spaces safely
  • prepare and use appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE)
  • use rescue equipment safely
  • follow procedures
  • deal with emergencies.

There is also a behavioural emphasis on the learner undertaking the assessment in an efficient and safe manner.

The learner must demonstrate sufficient knowledge and understanding of emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from confined spaces, and must demonstrate the appropriate practical skills and knowledge, through a mix of practical observation and written assessment.

This Course is available for Water (6150-05) or Non-Water (6150-55)

Course Designed For

All personnel who have been selected to act as part of an “On Site” rescue team. This is due to the high risk activities of the confined space entrants, where the “On Site” presence has been determined to be necessary to comply with the Confined Space Regulations.

Course Pre-requisites

Learners must hold the Working in High Risk Confined Spaces qualification and they must also be medically fit to attend this course. Confirmation of a valid medical certificate may be required prior to course commencement.

  • Prepare to work safely in confined spaces under emergency conditions
  • Enter and exit confined spaces safely
  • Prepare and use appropriate respiratory protective equipment (RPE) in accordance with manufacturers specifications
  • Use rescue equipment safely and in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions
  • Follow procedures and work safely
  • Deal with emergencies
  • Use appropriate behaviour for carrying out emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from confined spaces
  • Use appropriate knowledge for carrying out emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from confined spaces
  • Apply relevant industry standards for carrying out emergency rescue and recovery of casualties from confined spaces

Course Qualification

Learners will obtain certification from City & Guilds (awarding body)

Registration card can be issued upon request (HSCT)

Refresher Training

3 Years until refresher is required as per HSE guidance (Full course)

Manufacturers guidance on breathing apparatus advises that refresher training for the use and operation of their equipment should be every 2 years
