Introduction

The aim of this course is to develop learners individual competence on the correct installation, inspection, maintenance, design and supervision of 12A/B installations in line with the NHSS 12 scheme requirements.

Course Designed For

All persons who will be required by their employer to work on motorways and or high speed dual carriageways as a traffic management foreman.

Course Pre-Requisites

Learners wishing to obtain NHSS 12A/B Foreman operational status should be registered with Lantra Awards as a Temporary Traffic Management Operative.

The registration as a Foreman will only become effective provided the logbook of assessments has been completed AND the one day Operative course certificate is still valid.

Candidates that are only doing the NHSS 12A/B foreman course as part of their TSCO requirements need not be registered as a NHSS 12A/B operative beforehand.

  • Health and Safety Executive – Their role in enforcing the Health and Safety at Work Act
  • Risk Assessments & Method Statements – What are they, why have them
  • Crossing the carriageway on foot – Introduction to Health and Safety document CIS 53
  • Video – Your Life in the Fast Lane
  • Documentation – Publications relative to the temporary traffic management industry
  • Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions – What is it, how does it relate to the TTM industry
  • Chapter 8, The Traffic Signs Manual – Types of works, definitions, safety zones
  • Crossing the carriageway on foot – Introduction to Health and Safety document CIS 53
  • Discussion on safe working methods for installation, maintenance and removal of signs and cones – Does not give definite safe systems of work but looks at different issues to be considered when developing a safe system of work.

Course Qualification

Certificate of training issued and valid for 2 years and is not proof of competence (TSCO Purposes only). 12A/B RTMO Status is a pre-requisite before a foreman’s card is issued upon successful completion of 12A foreman’s course.

From April 2019 all persons wishing to obtain NHSS 12A Foreman status will need to complete NHSS 12B LTMO course. 

Refresher Training

5 Years until refresher is required for operational NHSS 12A Foreman (card holder)

2 Years refresher is required for non-operational NHSS 12A Foreman (certificate holder)

Course Assessment

Following completion of the 12A foreman training course the learner can obtain full Foreman status (TM card) by completing a set of off site written assessments as prescribed in the Sector Scheme document.
