Introduction

This qualification is aimed at those with responsibilities for the maintenance of electrical equipment and for those undertaking practical inspection and testing of electrical equipment. It allows those with the responsibility for the testing and inspection of electrical equipment to gain a qualification suitable to their job role.

The 2377-77 qualification allows candidates to learn, develop and practice the skills required to inspect and test items of electrical equipment in line with the latest edition of the Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment. If learners already work as an electrician, it will add another string to their bow and can help them move up in the industry.

Learners completing the qualification will have the ability to carry out mandatory responsibilities within the workplace depending on their prior electrical knowledge.

This level 3 qualification has been developed in collaboration with the major stakeholders within the Electrotechnical industry the primary being the IET.

Course Designed For

This course includes both theoretic and practical content. The course will take a structured approach to ensure that all elements of the of the unit provides the learner with an understanding of Code of Practice for In-service Inspection and testing of Electrical Equipment  It is understood that people learn in a variety of ways, so the methodology will be varied as below:

  • Limited use of PowerPoint presentation
  • Constant use of IET Code of Practice text book to gain familiarity of layout for quick use during online examination.
  • Use of whiteboard and flip chart to explain testing procedures
  • Group work to add interaction and engagement
  • Practice paper to prepare for online examination
  • Set homework in preparation for next day of the course.
  • Practical application using basic electrical toolkit, PAT testing meters and various electrical equipment as appropriate to course (class1, class II and class II FE)
  • Continual assessment of understanding throughout the course

Course Pre-requisites

  • Learners must be 18 years or over.
  • Although City and Guilds have not specified set entry requirements for this course, it is expected that candidates completing the course should be familiar with electrical systems and the hazards associated with working with electrical equipment.
  • HSCT will carry out an initial assessment of candidates before commencement of course to identify they have any specific training needs, requirement of additional support and guidance, have already completed any units of the course and that the course is suitable for the potential learner.

Course Content

  • Identifying and understanding the definitions used in the IET Code of Practice.
  • Understanding the statutory and non-statutory requirements relevant to the management and maintenance of electrical equipment.
  • Understanding the electrical units of measurement associated with in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
  • Understanding the equipment construction classes and methods of protection within an electrical installation and how these relate to the provision of protection against electric shock.
  • Understanding the procedures for the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment.
  • Understand how to carry out combined inspection and testing.
  • Understanding the information that needs to be recorded following in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment
  • Be able to carry out inspection and testing of electrical equipment

City & Guilds Level 3 Award in the In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment (2377-77)

Refresher Training

Those carrying out electrical tasks are required to keep up with developments in technology and changes to Industry Standards and Legislation

  • 4 hours recommended guided home study
  • Online exam and practical assessment to be arranged with individual learners.

Course Assessment

Multiple Choice Test; Assignment.  2377-701

Practical assessment 2377-702 will be arranged with each learner and carried out by the named assessor. The Internal Verifier will carry out audits of the assessments and paperwork.
