Introduction

This course focuses on planning, organising and managing work safely in confined spaces including legislative roles and responsibilities, health and safety considerations and equipment requirements. The unit is designed for managers that are responsible for organising and planning work activities within a confined space. The manager may or may not supervise the actual job.

Course Designed For

This training is designed for all persons who are required to safely manage work in confined spaces, supervise the work and develop and maintain safe working procedures.

Course Pre-requisites

Learners must have relevant industry knowledge and experience before undertaking training and assessment. 

Course Content

  • Recognise and state the statutory requirements and relevant Approved Codes and guidance documents;
  • Define a Confined Space and apply the definition to a range of scenarios
  • Recognise the need to restrict entry to a confined space
  • Recognise that entrants to a confined space must work in accordance with a safe system of work.
  • Produce, review and revise risk assessments, method statements, tool box talks, hot permits and Permits to Work
  • Define and recognise the need for dynamic management of risk to implement a proven method of use
  • Recognise the relevant medical standards and fitness for work in confined spaces.
  • Recognise the classifications of confined space to meet industry specific standards
  • Identify potential confined space accidents to assist prevention but also the implications should they occur.
  • Identify and select confined space work equipment to ensure safe operation and use in a confined space.
  • Identify the need for effective lock out and tag out procedures
  • Be aware of the hazards associated with fire suppression systems, inert gas purging and hot work processes.
  • Identify and select appropriate portable gas detection equipment
  • Identify the occasions when fixed gas detection would be appropriate
  • Identify the test and calibration requirements for gas detection equipment
  • Identify the limitations of gas detection equipment
  • Operate and use gas detection equipment for both horizontal and vertical entry into confined spaces for both direct and remote monitoring.
  • Operate and use gas detection equipment for continual monitoring for personal safety
  • Develop confined space emergency procedures for planned and unplanned events
  • Identify and select suitable and sufficient respiratory protection equipment for work in and emergency escape from confined spaces
  • Recognise the need for Face Fit Testing to cover the requirements for respirators and breathing apparatus facemasks.
  • Prepare, complete and maintain test, servicing and maintenance records for all equipment
  • Identify and select suitable and sufficient emergency recovery/retrieval equipment for use in confined spaces.
  • Identify the need for an emergency team
  • Identify emergency services provision and response
  • Prepare emergency plans
  • Recognise the actions to take in the event of an emergency
  • Complete RIDDOR Reports
  • Monitor confined space entrants
  • Perform the duties of a confined space supervisor
  • Identify actions to take for incident investigation

Course Qualification

Learners will obtain certification from CABWI (awarding body)

Registration card can be issued upon request (HSCT)

Refresher Training

3 Years until refresher is required as per HSE guidance (Full course)
