Introduction

This Level 3 qualification is aimed at practicing electricians who have not carried out inspection and testing since qualifying or who require some update of training before going onto other City and Guilds qualifications. The 2391-52 qualification is also suitable for those with limited experience of initial inspection and periodic inspection of existing electrical installations such as those entering the industry from other engineering disciplines or who have been working in allied trades.

This qualification prepares candidates for the initial verification and periodic inspection of electrical installation work. To achieve Approved Electrician status with the ECS it is necessary for electricians to hold the current BS7671-18 and 2391-52 qualifications.

Course Designed For

This course includes a combination of theoretic and practical content. The course will take a structured approach to ensure that all elements of the of the unit provides the learner with an understanding of the full content of BS7671, Guidance Note 3 and the Onsite Guide.  It is understood that people learn in a variety of ways, so the methodology will be varied as below:

  • Limited use of PowerPoint presentation
  • Constant use of IET Wiring Regulations 18th Edition BS 7671 , Guidance Note 3 and Onsite guide
  • Use of whiteboard and flip chart to explain work related scenarios, fault finding exercises etc.
  • Group work to add interaction
  • Practice papers to prepare for online examination
  • Set homework which progress throughout the course duration.
  • Practical application on the specified electrical installation rigs.
  • Completion of classroom-based assignment which will be assessed as part of the qualification.
  • Continual assessment of understanding

Course Pre-requisites

  • Learners must be 18 years or over.
  • It would be expected that candidates have a basic knowledge and understanding of electrical science and principles and experience of electrical installation work either within the electrical contracting industry or an allied trade.
  • HSCT will carry out initial induction in order to find out if any learners have special learning requirements, will require assistance and guidance etc.

Course Content

The course will include the following content:

  • Understand the requirements of inspection and testing of electrical installations. This will include the purpose of initial verification and periodic inspection,
  • Understanding of the safety management procedures when undertaking inspection and testing of electrical installations.  This will include the identification of health and safety requirements when carrying out inspection and testing, the requirements of the Electricity at Work Regulations with regards to safety, describing the safe isolation procedures and understanding of the implications of not isolating electrical installations safely.
  • Understanding the requirements of inspecting electrical installations.  This includes initial and periodic inspection.
  • Understanding the requirements of testing electrical installations which will include initial and periodic testing.
  • Physically performing inspection and testing of electrical installations.

Refresher Training

Electricians are required to keep updated of amendments to the current BS7671 and to update to the next edition in due course.

For those electricians who wish to progress to design of electrical installations, information on the 2396-01 Level 4 qualification will be provided.

Course Duration

  • 5 days classroom training (one day per week for five weeks which allows for essential home study)
  • Additional day for online exam and practical assessment
  • Home study through guided homework assignments (approx. 4 hrs per week)

Maximum of 12 candidates

Full Covid-19 controls will be in place at all times during the course as per current legislation and guidance

Course Assessment

Assessment for the course includes the following:

  • Completion of the on-line multiple choice invigilated examination. (evolve) 2391-052
  • Practical Assessment 2391-502
  • Classroom based assessment – coursework
  • Candidates must successfully complete the assessments – 2391-052 and 2391-502 in order to achieve this qualification
