Fire Extinguisher
It is a legal requirement that all sites and premises are equipped with adequate means of fighting a fire. The timely operation and use of these first aid and firefighting equipment will save lives and property. Normal first aid firefighting equipment is portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets. This Fire Extinguisher Training course covers the operation and use of portable fire extinguishers and fire blankets.
Course designed for
Fire extinguisher training is designed for both management and staff to encourage them to recognize the need for and react appropriately in the selection and operation of the correct fire extinguisher when a fire is discovered.
The basic course is structured to include the practical operation and use of extinguishers.
Practical fire extinguisher training would be deemed necessary if employees are expected to correctly select, operate and use extinguishers, fire blankets or hose reels.
Employers have a duty to ensure that all employees are provided with adequate fire safety training on being given a change in responsibilities within the employer’s undertaking. This training shall include sufficient instruction and training on the appropriate fire safety policy and procedures with selected employees been given specific training on the extinguishers at their site of premises.
Course pre-requisites
Learners are required to be 16 years of age or above.
If training is to be carried out onsite, a fire risk assessment must be completed prior to the training event
Course content
- Chemistry of fire, fire spread, classes of fire and methods of extinction
- ASET – Available Safe Egress Time and the factors which can affect it.
- First Aid Firefighting Equipment – Siting, test and use.
- Observe the operation of a Water Extinguisher on a simulated Class B fire
- Observe the operation of a Foam Extinguisher on a simulated Class B fire
- Operate and use a Water Extinguisher to extinguish a simulated Class A fire
- Operate and use a Carbon Dioxide Extinguisher to extinguish a simulated electrical fire
- Operate and use a Fire Blanket to extinguish a simulated chip pan fire
Course qualification
Learners will be issued a certificate of attendance
Refresher training
Refresher training is required every 3 years as per industry guidelines
